Canning, Whakatane, from their son Maynard who is at present work ing his way round the world. His ship called at Buenos Aires, Santos and Montevideo. Describing his visit to Montevideo Mr Canning says that the La Plat a river on which it stands is so wide that one is out of sight of and so calm that it is more like a lake than a river. Tt is shallow and beacons mark th? channel. His plans were either to sign on again on the ship when it left London, or to take a Job ashore, but circumstances arose which made it neceasary to lake the second and in a second letter from London he told his parents that he had taken a job in Lyon's huge bakery. Writing from Greenwich he said that the balloon barrage was up in the sky, and a formation of bombers had just passed overhead. Air raid syrens were blown every day snd the parks were full of dugouts. Everyone was talking of war and people did not look too bright, but he was hopeful that war would be averted., Through a sailors* society, official he got in touch with Lyons and was given a job in the bakery which employs 30,000 people and covers 14 acres of ground. Before he was appointed he spent five hours in interviews. signing papers, and a medical examination. He hoped to hold tno job for a few weeks and thought the experience would be very valuable.
