GAMING CHARGES

THREE TAURANGA CASES Three men appeared in the Magistrate's Court at Tauranga on Thursday before Mr E. L. Walton S.M., to answer separately to charges relative to bookmaking. Douglas William Thorburn pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying 011 the business of a bookmaker. Sergeant Edwards gave details in connection with a double chart, and defendant was fined £10 and costs 10s.. W. G. Rae faced a charge of oper ating a common gaming house. Mr Cooney represented defendant, Sergeant Edwards, for the police, said a raid was made on the premises and while there a constable received a number of phone calls from people desirous of making bets. The magistrate said the fines would be heavier each time and imposed a penalty of . £30. information on the same lines was laid against W. H. Abraham, the fine in his case being £45.
