The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, AUGUST 11th, 1939. TOWN AND COUNTRY

ONLY by complete harmony of action can success hope to be achieved and this adage may particularly be applied to the running of an A. & P. Show, such as the fixture promoted by the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Society, the Annual meeting of which takes place in the County Council Chambers cm Monday evening next. The history of the Society's exhibitions reveals a steady series of progressive fixtures, which in the future bid fair to eclipse all shows of similar character in the rural areas. Such a high objective can only be by the co-operation of all sections of the community, and in using the word "community", we do not exclude the town residents. The Show is as much representative of the country life as it is of the town. There is unfortunately, the type of town resident, who considers it quite unnecessary to show the slightest interest in any event for which the farming community is responsible. There could be no greater mistake, for in a district such as ours, the inter* ests of the dairy farmer and the businessman are inextricably bound together, and spell uniformity of prosperity which is little short of astonishing. The businessman owes it to the farmer to take a keen .and lively interest in the Agricultural and Pastoral exhibition which represents the wealth of the district and the high standard of stock breeding and production upon which their common prosperity depends. At the meeting on Monday evening it behoves businessmen generally to demonstrate their' interest in the show by attending and perhaps assisting by helpful suggestion or constructive criticism in the running of the next fixture. The Chamber of Commerce which has shown initiative recently, might be actively associated with the movement and thus, help to cement and strengthen the already cdrdial relations existing between town and country. It is particularly d6sirabl6 this year that all should make an effort towards the Show's, success, as it has been suggested that being the Centennial year, there should be a two-day Show, an event which should draw visitors and exhibitors from a far wider area than in the past. With the balance sheet, (recently released) showing a healthy state of affairs rand an organisation, ready made and keen for bigger things, there is every! prospect of achieving this goal. The warmest} congratulations are due to those stalwarts,; who year after year have put their shoulders to the wheel and assisted the show forward. Their reward is the high measure of success that has attended their efforts, and in this appeal to businessmen of Whakatane to come forward and by active association or by more patronage assist forward the District A, & P. Show; we feel that ihe response will be warm, spontaneous artd generous.
