MAGPIE SEEN

unusual edgecumbe visitor A wild magpie, said to be the first one seen in ( the Whakatane district, was noticed the other day on a farm at Edgecumbe. Magpies are common enough on the East Coast, but, according to an informant, have not been reported here before. The bird was ndt a tame and flew into trees when an attempt was made to catch it. Another unusual b'rd on the same farm is a white sparrow which has been seen on the property for somo months. A visitor less welcome than the other two is a variegated thistle, which is also common on the other side of the island and is Regarded as a bad weed. This probably came in b'rd seed, and its growth was quickly checked.
