SATURDAY'S KEEN CONTESTS BUCCANEERS FIRST RUN PAROA DEFEATS HUI MAI The cold wind and periodic showers failed t 0 prevent a fair crowd of interested supporters gathering on the Athletic Domain last Saturday when a number of keenly fought games took place. Hui Mai a visiting senior team from Thames were deteatcd at the hands of Paroa, in a game of inconsistencies. Pa,roa had the first advantage and everything pointed to an eight point at least. The visitors however after a long spell of indifferent defcnce, suddenly assum ed the offensive and the locals were compelled to put their best foot for. ward to clinch the game by a margin of two points. The newly initiated Buccaneers, staged their first engagement and emerged with flying colours. This match interested a large attendance and in spite of the fact that many of those on the field -had not handled a football for many years, the going was always hard. City started well but was weak in playing members and could not maintain the pace. A number of juniors who filled the gaps gave an excellent display. A spirited contest was that between Poroporo and Taneatua, which was won by the former after a hard tussle. The A and B Junior game was something of a disappointment owing to the fact that several of those selected failed to turn up % leav ing both sides short handed.
