QUEEN CARINIVAL MEETING
THOSE who have the interests of sport at heart, and who desire to see Whakatane, fully equipped with the best facilities, on its public domain will make a point of attending the public meeting to be held in the County Council Chambers tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. It is hoped that the sports bodies will be able to take heart from the attendance at the meeting which as most citizens are aware aims at a comprehensive effort to erect accommodation on the Domain grounds, both for the benefit of players of games and also for the use of the spectators. It should not be necessary lo reiterate, the wonderful asset Whakatane has in the centrally situated sports area, which should serve, for many years as the natural recreation field for all sport in which the town 'is interested. It is necessary however to emphasise the duty which all citizens owe to any movement that offers to promote the general health and w r ell being of the community. In the proposal to hold a Queen Carnival, a general appeal will be made to all. Every person will be able to assist in some way. There can be no room for differences of opinion or the rajtling of old bones of contention. Here is a citizen effort, in which the town is literally called upon to help itself. There is nothing in the objective other than the progress and welfare of Whakatane. Sporting facilities are glaringly needed. Our town is definitely lacking without them, and stands poor comparison with other and smaller centres which have grappled with this problem years ago. In face of the foregoing, there is no reason to doubt that the response of the public will be a generous one and that the objective (£800) will be met in full. Details of the proposed campaign have already been published as a tentative guide for the benefit of creating interest. It is assumed that all, readers will have by now become conversant with the general objectives in view. The call is to action in a public spirited' and patriotic manner which is the essence of advancement and achievement . Co-operation will attain all goals, apathy and disinterestedness, will never get anywhere. Those who have the interests of our young people, in mind, and are proud of the town in which they have their homes, from which they draw their living are ask ed to be present to-morrow evening to assist forward the movement that promises Whakatane the sports facilities it has been denied' too long.
