MAIZE VARIETY YIELDS

WAIRQA EXPERIMENT INTERESTING RESULTS Many Opotiki farmers were inter. e.sled in experiments which were car. ried out in Poverty Bay in connection with maize production. Another very interesting maize yield trial ha? been harvested on Mr A. G. McPliaiUs property, Waipaoa. Weighings to provide the relative yields of green cobs have been made, *md much valuable data is expected when the matured grain is also weighed. Twelve varieties were planted by Mr. E. M. Bates, iV,!Se, in co.opcration with Mr McPhail during November and the cobs were harvested at the beginning of June. The maize was planted In duplicated plots, each consisting of two rows lch. 52ft. long, the width in the rows being 3ft The following are relative figures iii pounds of green cobs before cribbing, the figures given being the averages of the two plots:— Boone County White .. 149 lowa Silvermine 113 Learning 141 Ulmara White Cap .. ~ 140 Fitzroj' 137 Marigold .. 136 Funk's Yellow Dent .. 136 Gisborne Horsetoolh .. 133 Wellingrove 122 Earty Matador .. .. .. 119 Silver Queen i. 109 Golden Glow 103 Mr Bates points out that it must be realised that the above figures will be entirely different when the grain is weighed after shelling, for some varieties will have a greater core and moisture loss than others. The varieties will be cribbed in 12 different lots, and will be shelled some timo early in the spring. Alongside the experimental plot was a paddock which was sown ear. the latter containing heavier fobs and more of them than the experimental maize. The results of the weighing after the shelling will be looked forward to with considerable interest by all maize growers.
