o LINK WITH PAST UNCOVERED* TL.TREE FASCINES The Tauranga Borough Council'sstaff was recently engaged in opening: up the roadway on, the Strand opposite Mr G lmore Rodgers premises for the purpose of making a connection with the Monnt Maunganui water mains and the municipal water service and uncovered ti.tree fascines which indicated the old road' surface. The ti.tree, which was laid about twelve inches below the present tarsealed surface, was in a remarkablv good state of preservation. It was probably laid well over fifty years ago, and above it was to be seen the remains of the shelled roadway, whici was composed of thick coatings of" ring shell brought from the deposits in the neighbourhood of the NortU Rock Light at the Mount. Iri those days there were tremendous quantities of marine shell deposited in the locality. This wa> shovelled into drays, carted across the and loaded into a large scow, the Margaret, in Pilot Bay.
