CHILLY WEEK-END SNOW AND HAIL INLAND Despite the beautiful clear sunshine which alternated with the pass'ng of heavy storm clouds, Whakatane shivered in its boots during the pan week-end, many residents spend ing the two days indoors by the checry blaze of the open fireplaces. On all sides the chilliness of the weather experienced during the latter part of the week had left, its mark in the shape of tho snowcapped peaks of the surrounding hills. usual under such conditions wera was heavily mantled, wh le the lip of Mt Edgecumbe was also fringed with a dazzling white on Saturday. The greatest sight of all was present, ed .by the vast headland of tall hills to the sopth of Ohope Beach y where range upoft range were whitened with snow. In certain instances the fall must have been extremely heavy, for the snow withstood the suns rays on Sunday and was observed to assume "very beautiful tones of salmon pink towards evening. One peak which must have been at least three thousand feet high provided a very striking picture. About 3.30 p.m. a heavy fall of hail was experienced in the vicinity of the town, and in many instances the hail was banked up against fences and obstacles to a depth \of several inches. Reports from the country indicate that the fall was fairly widespread.
