WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

GATHERING AT EDGECUMBE VISITING MEMBERS ATTEND The June meeting of the Edgecunibc - Women's Institute took the form of an evening party to which members' husbands and families were invited, also members from Otakiri, Alatata and Whakatane Women's Institutes and Awakeri Woman's Division of the Farmers' Union. There was an excellent attendance and the meeting opened with the singing ol th r )de to Friendship. Mrs Le Liev r e president, then welcomed the visitors. Misses Hall and Hamilton played a pianoforte duet and other iteirfs in the programme included tap dancing by Misses N. and M. Jenson; recitation by Ron Snelling; two numbers by the Edgecumbe Quartette (.Mrs Gowie, Miss Hall and Messrs Jenkins and Fielder) were very much enjoyed. As also were two solos by Mr Fielder. A play entitled ''The Day's Good Cause,'' was then presented by the Drama Circle, which was heartily applauded. At the conclusion of the play a bouquet was presented to Mrs Irving the producer of the play and artistic shoulder sprays to eacn of the players, by Mrs. Lc Lievre. I A wall competition was won by Mrs Poole. A competition for a dinner was won by Airs Cowie and another for a poker worked bread board was won by P Burke. A good supper was served by the committee and a birthday cake made bv Mrs Le Lievre and iced by Airs Gibson was cut by Mrs \Vithv of Matata W.I. and distributed to all present. Community singing wa,s enjoyed at intervals throughout the evening to accompaniment by Air Jenkins and Airs K. Armstrong. A trading stall and an apron stall in charge of Airs Goldsmith and Airs Crang did excellent business. The meeting closed witn the National Anthem. SHOPKEEPERS BENEFIT The import restrictions la the ease of cosmetics, proved an ill wind which has blown a certain amount of good in the direction of the smaller shopkeeper.
