SLIPS ON ROADS
RESULT OF GALE ' : .7§ ■■v|l FLOODING AT MATATA >( The gale caused little damage in Whakatane itself but there were minor slips on hill roads on either side of the Rangitaiki Plains, traffic being delayed for a time on Tuesday night by a half.ton, boulder whiefl* fell on 'the Waimana Gorge road. JUwas eventually shifted by explosives. The road under the, cliffs past Mat- , ata was blocked for about two hours by slips. Matata on Tuesday afternoon had .something reminiscent of the clouil- t burst of a year ago, and old residents state 'that had the rain continued for 2fc|* an hour or so longer 3 us t as much damage would have been done. As it was the road from Lee's corner to , the tennis courts Avas under about # two feet of water and logs were swept down from the hills and deposited on the road. The power was off in Matata foo about a minute, at the height of the electrical storm when lightning struck the line and tripped it.
