PAROA'S GOOD WIN
Fine clear weather favoured the continuation of the Whakatane Rugby Union's competitions in the Domain last Saturday, where before a large and enthusiastic crowd of spectators, some keen matches took place Paroa fielded a particularly fit side against the City fifteen, and though the initial stages were even enough, the staying power of the black jerseys proved too much for the locals AA r ho at the conclusion had lost the sting which they infused into their earlier efforts. The juniors played on the two the match between Star and Old Boys being by far the most interesting. Star continued their recent good showing and Avon by a good mar gin. Old Boys (Reserves) could only muster 11 at the kick off and though this number Avas augmented as 'the game adA-anced, Paroa had a comparatively easy time of It and experienced no difficulty in, winning by a cricket score. THE SCORE BOARD Seniors. Paroa 21 beat City 6. Taneatua 21 beat Waimana 13. Poroporo 1 lbeat Ruatolci 0. Juniors. Paroa 23 v Old Boys (R) 3. Star 8> beat Old Boys 0. Third Grade. Whakatane 6 beat Taneatua 0. SENIORS PAROA 21 v CITY 6. Swift work in >the first few minutes resulted in City having the initial advantage. OsAvald cutting through, and actually reaching the line ; where he was grassed by the fullback. A scrum on the line resulted Paroa clearing. The forwards now Avagcd a pitched battle in Paroa'S half. X useful free kick award Came to City in a handy position.. Oswald however missed. The blacks found strength in a series of loose forward rushes and the tfnvn boys Avere soon reduced to a desperate defence. From some close in play Dodd secured and dived The same man converted. Paroa 5, City 0. City noAv found their feet and the backs swept into action from a h:\rrl fought midfield scrum. A penalty award was taken by Best who sent the leather oA*er the bar from an acute angle. Paroa 5, City 3. Paroa forwards Avere once more to the fore and Goodall the blue fallback Avas bustled in the face of a well supported rush. The blacks came through Avith little or no opposition and Lawson dashed over to score. Dodd had no difficulty in conA'erting. Paroa 10, City 3. Keen exchanges at halfway gave the blues a chance :and ! the back line, handling nicely swept into action. OsAvald sprnted down the side line and to scenes of wildest enthusiasm Wilson, touched down in the corner. Best narroAA'ly missed conA'erting. At half time the scores Avere Paroti 10, City 3. Paroa Avere all attack from the new kick of;. Caught off their guard the blues gaA"e way and the. ga,me at their last line. ReceiA'ing from a short kick Courteney with a great burst of speed set sail for the line and scored. Dodd failed to coirvert. "iroa 13. City 6. Oswald delighted the home support, cvs Avith a thrilling dash to the goal. Unfortunately he lost the ball a p ev feet from the objective. llohapat a rcA-ersed the tables by a tricky sprint through the opposing backs. He Avas grassed by O'Donnell but Dodd who was in fast attendance carried on an'l Avith 'three tackier« adhering touched down in the corner The shot at goal failed. Paroa 10, City G. Showing of wear the blu<><~ were hard put to it to hold up th > next invasion Avhich carried to their last quarter, the Mack backs swung into motion again and after obtaining the OA-erlap Lawson scored in the corner. Dodd converted with a avcll time! kick. Panvi 21, City 6. A swift City counter attack caught the Paroa forwards off side and touch nv.l go play on the score line the side liners a 'thrilling five minute? but the black defence remained unbroken. The game ended'soon after Mr F.. Wcderjll was referee.
JUNIORS STAR 8 BEATS OLD BOYS 0. Star: Stewart (2), Wilson. Sullivan, Thorburn, Morpeth, Thorn, Melville, Green, Crapp, Brit, ten, Thompson, Morpeth D c Lacey. Old Bovs: Rowson, Armstrong, Bridger, Coutts, Moore (2) Cleland, Langley, Thompson, Good all Back Laloli, Fitchett, Marks. •> The first half opened with S'tar the aggressors. Thorburn missed a penally. Old Boys had several free kicks one ambitious shot at goal failing. Rowson, was hurt and Thompson went to fullback, Dean coming on. Chambers cut through brilliantly when liis opposite number looked for an inter, ception, and he ran like a train to the line. A forward pass killed the movement. Old Boys forced twice. Thompson, (Star) was hurt. The Old Boys forwards were playing the Star backs and making quite a good job of it, and there was no score until Thorburn kicked a great goal from a penalty on the side line. Star 3, Old Boys 0. Star were penned up for a time in the second half, De Lacey and Tlior. burn, saving in tight moments. Eventually Star worked down field and Britten ran to the passing to T. Crapp when Thompson tackled.. Crapp shot infield and the posts Thorburn converted. (8-0). Star pressed continuously but opportunities went begging. Finally Old Beys cleared and there was heavy rucking on the Blue line. However, Old Boys could not finish off their movements, and 'the end 'of the game came with Star on the attack. The Star backs showed combination throughout. Chambers and Morpeth were in good form. Thorburn was solid anxl ias kood a kick as ever. The forwards rallied towards the end and gave the Old Boys pack as good as they got. De Lacey was a disturbing clement when he got among the Old Boys backs. Best Old Boys forward was Cleland. TANEATUA 21 BEAT WAIMANA 13 Taneatua thoroughly deserved their win over Waimana at Taneatua and the score Would have been greater if Janeatua had not fumbled several grea,t^ chances. It *vas largely a forward game with exciting play as the scene changed from one end to'the, other. The Taneatua back line was superior to Waimana's and this, with the edge in the forwards, won them the game. | PAROA BEATS OLD BOYS (R) Old Boys were fo-ir under strength 'from "the first whistle, and though several individuals made a good showi ing upon occasions, they were never at any stage, anj-thing other tha i a •well ■ outclassed side. This was more noticeable in the second half when the black jerseys clapped on most of their points. Scoring for Paroa Ave re M. King. S. Mokai, I. Cooper. T. Buller o try each G. Hakopa, two tries, Rauhuhu a penalty k'ck and Hakopa a converted try. T. Riini scored the only points that came to Reserve's.
