SHOW CIRCUIT
CONFERENCE AT TE PUKE
TAURANGA'S CHANGE OF DATE A Conference of delegates from the A. and P. Associations of the Bay of Plenty was held in Te Puke last week in order to find at solution of the difficulty that has arisen in the fixing of show dates for the circuit owing to the action of the Tauranga association. At the last conference Tau_ ranga was allotted Feb_ ruajy 14, but this was found to be unacceptable, and the Tauranga association decided to hold ils show on January 27. In the opinion. / of the other associations this would leave too long a period between the Katikati, Tauranga and Te Pukti shows and "would be detrimental to exhibitors of stock and ring competitors who usually made the complete round of shows. It was decided after discussion that the original dates be adhered to, and that delegates from the other associations should meat the Tauranga association to discuss th e matter* The conference was presided over by Mr F. B. Hartstone, president of the show circuit. Delegates were pre,* sent as follows: Messrs C. B. Roan * W. Capamagian, O. P. Coleman (Katikati), R. Ruddiclc (Whakatane), K. A. Bennett, D. S. Ross, E. Morton (Te Puke) F„ B. Hartstone, G. G. Norri.s 1 , A. C. Isherwood A. J. Callagher, secretary (Tauranga), S. M. Jephson, J. R. : D. Looney, G. E. Watson, (Opotiki)! SATURDAY ONLY DAY The chairman explained to the con_ f ference the reason for the change of date of the Tauranga association. s Saturday was the only day that was suitable for Tauranga as the association was largely dependent on the gate for its revenue and Saturdaywas now the weekly half-holiday fixed for the town. He would like to ! correct the impression that his asso_ ciation objected to Te Puke having a Saturday for their show r day. He and his association were entirely iu agreement with Te Puke having a ' Saturday. He said the time was at hand when all shows would be held s on the day of the weekly half-holi-day, a.nd Tauranga was one that desired a Saturday. It wa»s, imperative that Tauranga show should be held on the weekly half holiday' and January 27 was tli e only day that did not clash with the other dates fixed by the las J t conference. Mr Ross s=aid that as far as his as. >, sociation was concerned they did not, have the impression that Tauranga objected to 1 Tc Puke having Saturday. He would like to make that point ckar. It was unfortunate that anv such impression was held and it was not true. Mr Jephson said if Tauranga took the 27th January it would break Hie circuit and result in the disbanding of the show circuit. Mr Bennett said there must be two shows a week to enable exhibitors to do the circuit. By each associatioa . claiming Saturday it meant extending the circuit from about a fortnight to one month. ' MONTH TOO LONG. Mr Moi'ton said a month on the circuit was too long for exhibitors to . have stock on the road. He regretted: if any ill-feeling was engendered. Mr Coleman asked if the meeting was in order. Mr Gallgaher said the meeting was in order. The circuit association had no rules governing this aspect oi* the proceedings. ' Mr Isharwoqd said the fixture a* laid down by 'the last conference w.i> quite unsuitable for Tauranga. He thought business houses would not agree to closing their premises other than the weekly half-holiday. The association Avas dependent on thrr gate and had to eater for that. The business people by their membership > gave substantial support to th«. show and had to be considered. Mr Ross said delegates to the conference should stand by the decisions 3f the conference. The original ide\ ?f the combined association was to ivork together. - Mr Ruddick said the date allotted :o Whakatane was suitable. Exhibiors did not want the circuit to dnir» »n too long. He would like to set - ome agreement. The chairman said it appeared that he conference kad reached n dead. ock. He had no authority to m alternative date. Mr Ross suggested that the deviates meet the Tauranga association ind discuss the position. Tt was decided on the motion of '.Ir s 4<yjhson that the original dates [Continued foot of previous column)!
