BOROUGH WORKS

DEPARTMENT HEADS REPORT The borough foreman Mr W. S. Henderson, in his report to the Wim katane Borough Council presented at Monday night's meeting among other matters mentioned in connection with the Goulstone Road drainage that approximately seven, chains of concrete pipes had been recovered from Mr Green's and Mrs Thompson'? sections for use in the 15 chain under ground drain on the south side of Goulstone Road to connect with Washers drain. The balance of Uie pipes had been ordered. A further section of the Maraetotai'a drain and 20 chains of drains from Commerce Street south were cleaned. A new footpath from Haig Street to Love, lock Street on King Street was laid down and metalled, and concrete paths and car ramps from houses in the Government housing block continued to the borough footpaths in Sou tar's Avenue and Lovelock Street. The King Street extension had been remetalled and coarse metal spread on, Benson's Road at Hillcrest. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER j The electrical engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, reported that a number of leaks in the pipeline at the headworks were attended to and other necessary work carried out. New secondary lines on Hillcrest were com. pleted, as were the new substations in the borough yard and at Lovelock Street,. Both were in service. The town load was transferred to the underground cable on June 10. The four new service lines erected included three on Hillcrest and seven new installations connected up. New poles had been erected on the Taneatua Road so that the 3300 volt line to the pumping stition m'ght be shifted for the P.W.D. road alterations Tn the waterworks department he icported that considerable trouble had been experienced with both the pumping plants during the month. The old pump was given a complete overhaul by a fitter from A. and G. Price, Thames. Since then it had been necessary to take it to pieces and make further adjustments by the council's own staff. New liners and gland packings had also been, fitted to No. 2 pump. Amplifying his report later Mr Lysaght told couic'llors that Price's man had had a Aery difficult job. It was no fault of Jiis that trouble hai developed later. The old pump war; very difficult to service.
