POWER FOR HEADS

BOROUGH OR BOARD DISCUSSION AT COUNCIL Them was a full discussion at Monday night's meeting of th:? Whaka. tane Borough Council on the subject of the supply of clectricitv to The Heads. The council had before it a letter from Mr* A. G. Hultquist, M.P., asking for its views. The Mayor 5 Mr B. S. Barry, said the council Avas not the stumbling block in the master. Mr F. J. Burt and Mr J. D. Dicker had arranged to call on him to discuss the question, but lie had not seen them, and the council was now waiting to hear the board's views. He thought the power board would probably prefer the borough to supply the area. SUPPLY TO PA. Due to an oversight when the board's licence was framed, the pa had lieen included in its area as wcjl as the council's. The council supplied the pa and they did not want to lose the revenue. He thought tha* they phould write to the Public \\ 01 Department and ask them to cut the pa out of the board's area. Cr C. S. Armstrong thought- that that might antagonise the board. Mr Otley thought that the.board only wished to supply the people at The Heads. POWER FOR SEWERAGE SCHEME Cr A.J. Canning added that when the sewerage scheme went in they would have to put a line down to The Heads themselves and that would mcani duplication. Cr F. Prideaux .said that the fact that the power board was putting its lines through borough property indicated that at some date the power board .would be ready to hand the scheme over to them., Cr W. Sullivan pointed out that the power board would 'supply Th<* Heads by a line over difficult hil; county. fi e could not see how that would pay them. The borough should supply The Heads, but they could not meet the cost out of revenue as in the past. These extensions were becoming a Serious drain. He thought that if the people at The .Heads wanted power they should come into the borough. They avoulci not be rated for special rates but foi general ra<tes which, he Avould be little different from the county general rate. SMALL LOAN The cost of reticulating the new streets had been heavy, and if they were going to have much of that in the future they would have to con ?ider asking the ratepayers for a small loan. In that case The Heads could be included. Cr Otley said the people had beci-. Avaiting for some finality. He thought that one of the committees of tht> council deal Avith the matter if poav er Board repre, sentatiA T es called on them within,' a few days. It Avas decided tha.t the matter hcleft in the hands of the finance co'nvmittee.
