WEEK-END SPORTING

wintr!y weather for rugby DOMAIN GAMES NOT THRILLING Football in Whakatane and surrounding centres wa« played in dismal conditions on Saturday afternoon, and the crowd which watched the games in the Domain scattered quickly when the rain came. The football on the Domain was not Inthe best match being the junior one between the Old Boys' teams. In the juniors Waimana defaulted to Paroa. At Taneatua Montgomery, Whakatanc's halfback, was taken from the field with a hip injury. An X-ray-showed no dislocation. D. Rota, a. Rangitaiki player, was admitted to hospital with a broken fibula. THE SCORE BOARD SENIORS Paroa 30 beat Ruatoki 0 Taneatua 11 b'cat Whakatane 8 Waimana 15 beat Poroporo 6 RANGITAIKI Matata 33 beat Edgecumbc 10 JUNIORS Old Boys 6 beat Reserves 0 Taneatua 6 drew with Poroporo lj Paroa beat Waimana by default SENIORS Paroa 30, beat Ruatoki 0. Ruatoki: Purewa, Rangiaho Rangi, Trainor, Ruri,, Puke, Walker Paul Murdoch, Hubert, Rangihao, T. Trainor. No one expected Ruatoki to beat Paroa, but in the first spell Ruatoki defended resolutely and only allowed three scores, none of which w-ere converted. In the second spell Paroa':! pace told and the Blacks added another 21 points. Paroa penned Ruatoki right from the beginning, Arrol being the first to score from a forward rush (3-0). liiiatoki's backs took a turn, but first !lor' and then Rangi failed narrowly. Ruatoki broke awa.y again, but a ward pass spoiled the movement in which Trainor figured prominently. From a line out the ball came to I Holm pat a who ran from the 25 to score Dodd missing the kick (6-0). T. Simpson was the next scorcr, running through without opposition from Ruatoki's fullback. In the second spell, with the fullback well out of position,, Lawson followed fast and scored. The kick missed. (12.0). Ruatoki had, some hee tic minutes on the Paroa line but were unlucky. The rain was now falling solidly and the game was straggling. Paroa kept ripping in, and Stewart was the next scorer. That kick missed too (15_0) . Hohapata g°t another try with a determined run. r t was one of Dodd's hardest shots, but he put it over (20.0). Lawson got another try and Hohapata goaled (25-0), and just on time Harawer# scored. The kick hit the cross bar and bounced over to make the final tally Paroa 30 % Ruatoki 0. Ruatoki were a weakened team, and they had some passengers, but they did not altogether lose heart. The Paroa score w >u?d have been greater but for very bad kicking at goal. Mr Bonvell refereed. WAIMANA 15 BEAT POROPORO 6 At Waimana after a clean, n?rd and fast game Waimana beat Po"o.. noro. Waimana thoroughly deserved their win, if hardly by that margin of points. forwards won the game for them, harrying the Poroporo backs in •■■sweeping loose "diiio their own backs defended stout ly. Poroporo's rearguard seemed tir. Ed and sluggish and the forwads were outplayed. The Rev K. J. Watson refereed. TANEATUA 11 BEAT CITY 8 Taneatua were a shade lucky to beat Whakatane at Taneatua. The score was 3 all when Montgomery got a kick on the hip, and after examination by the referee, Mr Wederell, he was carried off the field by Best and Dennehy. While th:\s- forwards were handing the injured man over a locked gate to a car the game wns restarted and Taneatua sco"cd a try which was not converted (6-3). Whakatane "scored again, later and Oswald converted to put his side in the lead. Towards the end of the game Charman at fullback fumbled badly and the Taneatua forwards were there to pounce on the ball for a try' under the posts. Tt was converted. Whaka. tane tried desperately, but Taneatua held the ga,te shut to the end of the ■'nme.

JUNIORS 6 drew Taneatua 6 The* teams' were:—' Taneatua: A t C. Mitchcll J. and T. Sykes, Mills, Dunstan. God dard,, D. Old. A. Conn, Ruddick, Beechv, .Franklin, Gee Mc_ P her son. Poroporo: G. Lawson, T. Huta., T. Ruri K. Kelly, B. Nuku, M. Nuku T. Korohiko, N. Ijer, P. Ratahi, Wa.tarawi, T >. Mason. J. Riini T. Hotene and R. Pakeha Taneatua scored a gift try early when the fullback waited for a high ball to bouncc and Mitchell, who had followed up smartly, took it off him. The kick missed (3-0) . Aided by good kicks to the line Poroporo pressed until Taneatua changed the location of the struggle with heavy forward rushes. The Taneatua forwards were big hoys and they used their weight to advantage to keep up the pressure pretty wall to halftime. They were unlucky not to score. After halftime Taneatua continued to keep the game tight with their forwards, but whenever the Poroporo back line could get the ball it gained useful ground. Riini missed a free kick then a moment later Taneatua were offside in front and Ijer tied the score (3-3). . Now the game woke up and Taneatua pressed, Poroporo forcing a couple of times. Eventually Poroporo cleared Ijer put their nose in front with another penalty (6-3). Sykes later made it a draw with a penalty for Taneatua. The game was not what it should have been as a spectacle largely because the Taneatua forwards controlled much of the play. Mr B. Norman refereed.

OLD BOYS G BEAT 0.8. RESERVES 0 The match opened evenly, the new Reserve team giving a good account of themselves, considering that was the second occasion on ■which members had played together as a team. The veterans were therefore at a decided advantage,, though the unfortunate aspect was the appearance of both teams in the white- jer_ sevs of the club. This must have been puzzling to the referee at times but on the whole he managed to keep good control in spite of it. Reserves will with a little nice practice be"omc a team to be reckoned with. Scorers for Old Boys were P. Back and G. C. Moore, a try cach. Mr L. Lvsaght was referee.
