Sam Cohu s a native, was charged before Messrs G. A. Brabant and C. G. Lucas, Justices of the Peace, at the Whakatane Court on Wednesday with assault on a native girl at Te Teko on May 13. Cohu pleaded not guilty at first f but pleaded guilty when the charge was explained to him through an interpreter. Constable J. Cummings said the girl had been, dragged behind a shop at Te Teko by accused. When the police interviewed him he admit, ted the charge and said he would I plead guilty. ! The girl's statement was read out and accused gave evidence;' The Bench; said he pr&fctically admitted the assault in his'evidfence. Such cases were Considered serior-s and Cohu would-be fined' 1 Sib and costs 9s 6d. He was given a fortnight to pay. Huge stocks of Blankets and Rugs at Bridgers Limited.
