WILD PIG BONUS
o WHOLE OF DOMINION NINE MONTHS' SEASON The announcement that, with t!j« aim ol' keeping the wild pig menace in cheeky the Government had decid. Ed to pay a bonus of Is a head on wild pigs in all counties of the Dominion between June 1, 1939, and February 29., 19-10. was made by Mr •T. M .Ferridav, inspector of'stock. New Plymouth says the Taranalci Herald. Taranaki back-country farmers will welcome the Government's announcement, for wild pigs do considerable damage in rooting up valuable pieces of land, particularly on river flats, A pig-hunting party who spent last wcek.end in the country around the upper reaches of the Waitai'a River reported a typical example. At the base of a range of hills and in the bend of ihe river a ten-acre piece of land had been rooted up by wild pigs for the whole of its area, making it useless for stock grazing for many months to come. FARMERS SUFFER Patches of good green grassland are scarce in the back country and the farmers suffer great loss when their land is damaged by marauding Digs in this way. Last vea.r the shilling bonus was removed in most districts of New Zealand from th? end of February. The removal affected a,ll counties in Ta ran aid,, but the Agriculture D- 4 - •jartnvMit in New Plymouth made a special appeal for the Ciifton County with the result that the bonus was paid for this county for a. short period of s ! x weeks from September last. Mr erriday said that the snouts nnd tr.ils were to be in a green state when handed in.
