SHRUB PLANTING TIME
ORDER PLANTS NOW AND 1 PREPARE' PLACES FOR THEM 1 May, June and July are the months in which shrubs and trees can be suc- ■ cessfully transplanted in all parts of New Zealand. Order your requii'ements without delay, as it is the ! early buyer Avho receives the best specimens. It is always wise to prepare the soil some weeks in advance of actual thus giving the various soil mixtures an opportunity to mellow and consolidate. Before adding fertilisers study the requirements of the plants. Some will be found to dislike lime, while others will demand it; some will welcome cow manure. but others will object to it. No general rule can be safely laid down and it is aways wise to investigate first. One thing all plants have in common, however, and that is o love of well drainecj, well worked soil. That is a preparatory job you can get on with now. If you don't know the requirements of the plant you plan to order seek your nurseryman's advice. STILL SOLID o ■ OLD WPIAKATANE POLICE STATION / They built them solidly in the old days. The residence of the Whaka_ tane Police Station in spite of its 59 is still in very good condition, a,nd the timber looks as though it has many useful years in, front of it. The heavy gauge iron on the roof is still sound. The quality of the work that went into buildings erected in the last century is shown by the heavy rolls of lead that' have heen taken off.
