OPOSSUM TRAPPING
LIMITED SEASON IN EG MONT The growing menace of opossums m Mount Egmont and the damage to the native bush will be cheeked by the announcement of a limited open season for trapping opossums from June 1 to August 1. A close season throughout New Zealand was sought in some ciuarters but this was strenuously- opposed bv the Egmont National Park Board and the three acclimatisation societies. The Park Board sought a three months' open season while the Taranaki, Hawera and Stratford Acclimatisation Societies agreed to fall in line with the suggestion of the Department of Internal Affairs that the -cason should be of two months" dura tion. The reason for the restriction of 'he length of the season is the fact that the overseas market-for opossum skins is still in a very deprcss°d state. South Island finnis interested in the disposal of skins recommended to th£> Government that there should o;> 'io open, season at rill this year.
