COAST ROAD

COUNCIL DISCUSSION NEW OHOPE THEATRE The proposed main highway through Ohope Beach was discussed by the W T hakatane County Council at its meeting on Wednesday when a letter came before it from the manager, Whakatane Buildings Ltd, who stated thr.it tenders have been let for the construction of a new theatre at Ohope Beach, and the builders are anxious to commence building operations at the earliest possible date. In a recent communication the engineer stated that the permanent levels would be approximately two feet below the present road level. It will be necessary to have both road and footpath excavated to the re. quired levels prior to building. Owing to the lowering of the road and footpath the theatre site will to be excavated accordingly, and it is suggested that the council also handle this work for which (theatre site only) the company pays 6d per yard ? council to use the spoil. Anticipating Road Cr J. L. Burnett said that as there was a suggestion for a road along the coast could not take any action which would be anticipating the position. Cr C. McCready said as the local; body responsible the council must accept things a.s it ii now. ''We could not agree to lowering the road and bringing it into a new level," said Cr Burnett. Might be no Road ''The Public Works Department are asking the county eounpil to anticipate something that might never happen. This is unfair." said Mr C. G. Lucas. "We should ask the P.W.D to declare a centre line .proclamation so that the people who build do so at their own risk. We could write to the P.W.D." Mr Brebner said the department could not do anything until they had decided on their route. It w r a.s eventually agreed to grade down the high j portion of the road. i ■
