POGRAM ON THE KEA
PROTEST OF DEFENDERS The executive of the Forest and Bird Protection Society continues to bu strongly opposed to the agitation of pastorallsts for a subsidised extermination of Keas in sub-alpine country of the South Island. The defenders of the playful parrot declare that far too much credence is given to lurid allegations of the Kea's crimes against sheep. They give a reminder that some of the owners or lessees of high country runs have destroyed the natural cover of the soil by excessive burning of tussock, and have thus prepared the way for erosion, which would spread to the better farming lands of the lower levels. Their belief is that an accurate fairminded investigation of the whole matter would prove the Kca to be a friend—not an enemy—of New Zealand. The society l a,lso reminds people that the occupiers of the high lands where the Kea lives, took up thei,r holdings with the full knowledge of the presence of Keas, a>nd that it is therefore their responsibility to find the means to kill the birds if they so desire. General* taxpayers and ratepayers should not be penalised for the benefit of the individuals con.
