FIRE IN FORESTS
CARELESS SCRUB BURNING
Mr A. Morris Jones mentioned at :i reccnt meeting of the Executive of the Forest and Bird Protection Society that careless burning of fern and scrub had caused much damage to native bush in various parts of Marlborough Sounds, particularly in the Lower Pelorus Valley. A farmer of the old type in that valley had told hunters to burn Ivacken wherever thev pleased on his estate.
Severn] members gave the opinion that time had corac for a strict strong control of scrub burning which frequently caused fire to spread far beyond the boundaries of the estates where it had started. It was decided !o bring this matter under the notice of the New Zealand Farmers' Union.
