VISITOR TO WHAKATANE

Sir Ernest;.Davis, as chairman ott Hancock and Co., took the opportunity during his brief visit to Wffilp katane on Monday to inspect the Whakatane Hotel in Unfinished state. Sir Ernest said that he was impressed with the furnishings and tasteful decoration of the hotel and also that •5 he was pleased his company had done something to add to the amenities of Whakatane. Sir Ernest made only the bri<|fes£ visit to Whakatane. He at midday from Auckland and left again early in the afternoon. Chief purpose of his visit was to make arrangements for the appeal in aid of the Auckland provincial fund to fight cancer. To this end he conferred with the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry. Sir Ernest told the BEACON that he was gratified with the response which Whakatane was likely tgknake and that he hoped that the street collection, organised by* the of Whakatane, Mrs B. S. would be a pronounced succes^V^ He said that the funds would be* devuted to collating and recording statistical information in connection with the incidence of cancer. This was a feature of the which, in its way was as important as pure research as it . give much valuable data and pr&bably indicate lines on which doctors could concentrate their efforts. The statistician employed would work at the Auckland Hospital which Sir Ernest hoped to see become the centre for cancer treatment for the province.
