CRICKETERS AT PLAY
SOME DEADLY BOWLING
The annual single innings smoke concert was played in the Masonic Hall on Saturday night by members of the Post and Telegraph Cricket Club and their guests, who included members of other clubs and representatives of other branches of sport. The 'wicket was in, good order and the light was excellent when the president Mr J. Rivett led his team on to the field of battle. Mr Rivett scored briskly from the beginning of his speech on the Rangitajki Cricket Association in which he was partner, ed in sparkling fashion, by Mr T. Dixon. A period of restrained scoring followed in which the gathering took toll of ihe bowling of the stewards, Messrs E. J. Irwin and F. Hollis. BATSMEN WELL SET Mr H. Jackson opened his shoulders on the subject of Kindred Clubs and he was followed by Mr Thomas. The batsmen were now well set and scored all round the wicket. The next stand was made on the subject of Donors of Trophies and Supporters, Mr L. Norris contributing a useful innings. He was followed by Mr Rivett and Mr J. Plamus who showed fine "footwork. Next boundary came from Mr Bennett who stood up to several overs at the Visitors , end, Mr Savage playing a nice straight bat when his turn came. Mr Rivett came to the crease' again to deal in his vigorous style with the toast of the club's secretary, Mr T. Dixon, and Mr Loane hit sixers off the toast of Kindred Sports in which he was partnered by Mr E. Currah (bowling) and Mr W. S. Henderson (rugby). SIGNS OF WEAR The pitch was wearing a little now" and the bowlers were coming into their own, but a good stand was made by Mr S. McLeod on the subject of the Artists, his fellow bats, men being Mr S. Wells and Mr Glen Hayden. Mr Rivett came in again and showed a wide riinge of strokes when he introduced the toast of the Stewards, and Mr F. Hollis was stylish when he took the bat. Last man in was the secretary Mr T. Dixon and he delivered a few offbreaks on the subject of the Press. FAST SCORING With the formal part of the game over a picnic spirit prevailed for the v est of the evening, all batsmen handling the bowling very capablv. Special tribute must be paid to the trundlers who stuck to their task manfully under.heavy punishment, and had th e satisfaction of getting a good bag of wickets.
The intervals between the overs were brightened by songs from McCracken,. a monologue by Mr Briggs and Glen Hayden's orchestra sent clown fast swing stuff. Mr T. \tkinson led community singing, and Mr H. Hudson sang feelingly. With "Mr F. Hollis he also made a Hue stand in two Maori songs. TEST TEAM The test team included Mr J. Rivett, president of the Post and Telegraph Cricket Club, the secretary, Mr Mr L. Xorriss, Mr Savage Mr H. Clelaivl. president of the Ran. gitaiki Cricket Association, Mr J. Thomas, Te Toko Cricket Club, Mr Briggs, Te Teko club's secretary. Mr W. Chambers, secretary Whakatarie Cricket Mr E. Currah, president Whakatane Bowling Club. Mr W. S.
