AUSTRALIAN BEEF

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE POLLED CATTLE DEMAND Because of the restrictions on her fat lamb exports, Australia is endeavouring in every way to improve her beef breeds. Number s of hi subclass English cattle have been imported, but the record trend has been, towards both the Polled Shorthorn and Polled Hereford breeds. One of the biggest cattle breeders in the itlie Kidman Interest recently secured just on a hundred and fifty run Polled Shorthorn bulls for their Queensland properties. Stud breeders in, Queensland are show ing preference for New Zealand bred Polled He re fonts, and Wright, Step-* henson and Co. Ltd. advise the sale ou account of Mr G. F. Moore, of Bushy Park Ka,i Iwi, to a leading Queensland Stud Master of an eighteen months old bull which Mr Moore inltended retaining as a herd sirs. This animal has splendid conformation, is low-set and shows exceptional quality. It is sired by Mr Moore's imported Polled bull and the dam is a polled cow from the great Amethyst family. Last year Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. shipped a bull from the same family tto Queensland where it took first prize at the Brisbane Royal Show. Sheep Breeders Visit. Mr W. S. Hedges, who is the leading Corricdale breeder in, Western and who recently inspected the South Island Corriedale studs, has just returned to the South Island. He has decided to secure 20 special stud ewes from the Bushey Park Stud of the late J. A. Johnstone. These ewes are from the ewes retained in the flock and it is seldom, that Bushey Park part with sheep of this class. The transaction is being arranged through the Stud Stock Department of .Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., and the ewes will be mated to the Bushey Park spec'ul sires. Mr Norman L. who controls the Abingdon Aberdeen Angus Stud in New South Wales, and is regarded as Australia's leading breeder, has just concluded an inspection of the North Island herds. Asked for his impressions, Mr Forstcr was rather hut stated he was very impressed with the cattle of Mr Thos.. May, of Mata. pihi, Hawkc's Bay. Whilst visiting the stud or Mr 11. B. Williams of Turihau Mr Forster was particularly impressed with a bull calf which he eventually purchased. Mi' Williams gcneroiiM* made Mr Forstcr a gift of the dim. Stud to be Dispersed. Following on Mr Forster s impressions, advice has just been received that Mr Thos. May is holding a dispersal sale of his cattle owing to his continued ill-<health. This sale is scheduled for Tuesday 20th June, and will be held on Mr MayTs property. Little need be said regarding the quality of this herd, but it is of interest to buyers to learn thavt the whole of the rising 2 year bulls, both run and stud, will be offered at this fixture. TRACTORS ON FARMS At the end of 19:57, ine Inst year for which figures are available, 6a8.) tractorg were in use on New Zealand farms. Last year £806,080 was spent on "all" tracttors > those exclusively for farm use not being classified separately. It may be assumed that trac tors now in use on farm work alone arc well over the 8000 mark. ——■■—————i
