FARMERS' YEAR

PRESIDENT'S REVIEW UNION ACTIVITIES DETAILED I \ * "In looking back over the past year, I feel that our branch has justified its existence by accomplishing several matters of importance though these are chiefly of a local nature/' says Mr E. C. Haulta.in, president of the local branch of the Farmers' in his report at the recent an. meeting of the branch. "Efforts have been made,.to further the consolidation of schools in this area, but although we have not attained our objective yet } I think that we, as a branch of the union, have done all we can," he said. "The pushing of the matter is now in the hands of the school and. they will bring the question to a, successful issue. Stock Inspector. -"We have brought to the depart, ment's notice the advisability of appointing a stock inspector resident at Whakatane, and have their assurance that when the matter comes vp for review, our request will be given favourable consideration. "Amongst other activities,- a successful social evening was held du'r_ jing the year. "Our membership was greatly increased due to the efforts' of the Mr Carter, assisted by the ■very willing members of the branch, ■who gave so much of their time accompanying Mr Carter on his round, and I think Mr Newton is deserving of the union's thanks for the time he devoted to this particular effort to the union. \ Labour Scheme. "The farm labour scheijie was in. augurated early in the year and a "number of farmers took advantage ©f it. A new farm manager ha 3 recently been appointed and I would like to appeal to farmers to give this scheme the support which it merits", i In connection with this matter I Ml that Mr R. Dunning, in his untiring efforts to promote and fur. ther this scheme, deserves the thanks of the whole community. Young Farmers. "Our offshoot, the Young .Farmers' Club, continues to be a very active and I will take this op. - portunity to remind you thaft an ap--peal has been made by them for produce, suitable for inclusion in their exhibits for the W&ikato Winter. S|u>w,'' he said. . •Turing the \ear considerable discussion has taken place regarding heavy traffic licenses on farmers' lorries, and the branch has approaoh- „ ed the Minister of Transport, bv let- . ter, asking for an amendment of the Transport Act, to permit farmers' lorries to cart their own goods without holding a heavy traffic license,

until the total derating of farm lands is brought about. "Our advocacy of the system of preferential voting being used by the union has resulted in our remit being adopted by the sub-provincial branch and we await with interest s its fate at the provincial conference in May. Calf Pool. "You will agree with me, I think, , t,ha,t we have 're'ally accomplished something in the forming of the bobby calf pool,'' said Mr Haultain. "Owing to thc interest taken, } and the time put in by some of our union members, a bobby calf pool has been formed and successfully operated for the past season. "AH credit is due to the branch, for the inauguration of a committee to confer with thc carriers on, the matter of transport charges in this area. This committee, composed of representatives from the farmers' ■ union county council, dairy company 'etc., has brought the negotia. tions to a successful conclusion. Captain Rushworth "As you know our new provincial president, Captain Rushworth, has accepted that position in the hope of being able to accomplish something for the farming industry } and therefore for thc Dominion as a whole In his previous position in, the House as a member of Parliament, he was unable -to do what he would hav<j wished for you all, due to lack of support. It is now up to as ill to encourage and do all we can to back him in this new undertaking. We have been very fortunate in having had a visit from him recently, and I feel with a leader such as he, we will push on to success in union affairs.
