10G IN THE WEIGHTS . ■ r _ r PREPARING ACCEPTANCES The Whakatane County Council was faced with a list of 10(5 npplij cants for the position of county inwhen the question ol" making an appointment to this office came before, it at the special meeting of the county Inst .Friday. The appli_ cants include farmers, horse trainers, warders, county employees university graduates, bee farmers sailors,, North West Mounted Policemen, teachers and men ins many other walks of life, the great majority coming from the Auckland province. The chairman, Cr J. G. Cliff McCulloch, moved that a committee to consist of Crs S. Spence and W. A. McCracken, with Mr Luc:is should go through the list and make an. appointment . Cr F. J. Burt suggested that they should merely reduce the number to reasonable limits, and he was supported by Cr McCracken who felt that the council should have the responsibility of making the final choice. The chairman pointed out that the matter was urgent;. They must have a ranger as there were many complaints of straying stock. Crs McCracken and Spence said that they would find it vcrv difficult to deal with the matter within the next few days, but eventually they agreed to act. It was decided that they should pick out the three most suitable applicants, who would be required to present themselves before the courts cil at its next meeting for a final choice to be made. The council will bear expenses. If
