BILLIONS OF DUCK
A LAGOON FULL OF THEM THE BEACON MAKES A DISCOVERY Is there a duck shooter in the* audience? If so, come forward. Now sir would you like to go to ft place where there arc 500 ducks ami 20 or 30 swans, all swimming about placidly and just asking to be shot.T But the catch is you can't shoot* them. So if your nerves won't stancl the strain don't go near the Matatat lagoon. — That sanctuary was black witli duckg a nd swan yesterday. The BEACON started to count their feet and divide by two in the approved fashion, but lost interest after tally* ing .'357 ducks. There were probably; as many again, but we will be con* servative. Squadrons of shags caused amuse-* I ment as they did their submarine act T sailing along and submerging in j turn, so Ithat out of the halLdozeni or so in the fleet only two or three' broke surface at the same tirne.t There were plenty of seagulls too./ In fact Fred Burt's front yard looked • like a poultry farm. Notable absentee was the white* heron whose arrival is anxicusiyr awaited. He is overdue, and one! school of thought favours the suggestion, that he has gone down to lh<* heronry in Westland to select a bride. It seems a long way to go, hot as we are no authority on the lovelife of the heron we make no com* ment. r To get back to those clucks. Is( ; there such a thing as a silencer foe a shot gun? Or can seme sturdy man bend me a nice bow and spseel a stealthy shaft. Apply BEACON. ——— !
