PLEA FOR THE GODWIT
—o A USEFUL BIRD Major J. R. Kirk, who has been one of the stalwart battlers for complete protection of the godwit dining many years, is hopeful that the campaign will be successful within, a measurable future. At the recent annual meeting of the Forest and Bird Proitection Society, he commended the Hon W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, for the limitation of the shooting season to two weeks, but declared that this wonderful bird had. a right to be on, the protected list the whole year round. It was a bird that did no harm and cer. tainly did some good. Some years ago in the Nelson district, when the godwits had been scared away from one of their haunts, it was noticed that shellfish began to suffer from a disease. Examination showed that this disease was due to a worm which ordinarily formed part of the £odwits' diet. ' It was good to have Farewell Spit declared a sanctuarj-, but it was necessary to have another at Parenga. hear the North Cape. He hoped that the Minister of Internal Affairs would recognise the need of such a sanctuary. DINNER FOR TEAM "A very generous action'' said the president Mr W. S. Henderson, when the executive of the Whakivtane Rugby Sub-Union at its meet, ing last night acc-.'ptc'.l the offer of Mr H. E. Cueksey to provide a dinner for the team winning the senior competition.
