The rat ran up Cook's trousers leg . was driving his car towards a bridge over the railway line, near Bangalow station, and as he kicked -to try and shake it down, his foot - struck the accelerator of the car. The car jumped forward, crashed jfat -through the fence, and hurtled over -the embankment on to the ra'.lway line. The car struck the railway line a few yards in front of an engine, which was shunting carriages, hut X: the engine driver was able to apply - the brakes in time to avert a move -jJprious accident. Jumping from the engine, the driver ran to Cook, who was able , to mumble, "A rat ran up my trous. ers." The driver saw the rat scamper out of the car wreckage. Sevv eral persons who had been attracted ,f to the scene threw stones at it, an:! it was killed.
