FREE CABLES

WHAKATANE SENT 32

Thirty-two Whakatanc people feT. for the lure of free cables Ito England on May 1, when the Post Office "shouted'' to mark the introduction of the new greeting service to England and other Empire countries. The offer of free cables only applied to the opening day of the service and now 12 word greeting cables may be sent for ss, with a charge of 5d for each additional word.

Since Whakatane sent 32 cables it is obvious that the big centres must have sent several hundreds, and thus thousands of extra messages must have gone out of New Zealand.

No doubt the hard worked dc.s_ patchers cursed the introduction of the scheme, but i.t is-rather a pleasant thought that for one day on this eventful year the cables must have carried a preponderance of cheerful messages of goodwill, rather than ominous news or diplomatic "rasp.

berries."
