THE LIBRARY

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

DRIVE FOR NEW MEMBERS

There was a satisfactory attend* I ance of members oi' the Whakatane | Public Library at Ihe annual meeting held in the library on Monday evening. Commenting on this the past president, Mr J. Aries, said he was pleased to see such a good attendance which showed that interest was maintained in, the affairs of the library. The librarian, Mrs H. Carr, in 'ier brief report said that a number of subscribers had left the district, and this had had its effect on the balance sheet. The standard of the library had drawn praise from visitors. Mr Arres said that last year subscriptions, had been shown as £61. This year they were £49 5s which was due principally to the operation of private book clubs. The grant from the borough had been t £2o. .All in afl they must congratulate themselves on a satisfactory position. Mrs K. Campbell, treasurer, read her report showing receipts of £86. The report wag adopted. Officers were elected as follows:— President, Dr E. T. Dawson; treasurer, Mr L. A. Partridge; committee, Mr Good, Mrs 13. Grayling, Mrs Carr.Rolletl, Airs B. S. Barry, Mr J. Arres. Dr Dawson said it would be a good idea for members to make a drive to get friends to join the library. The selection of books was good and would be better with, a larger list of subscribers. If members could make a drivei for ne>v subscriptions it would help the position. They must get the greatest.;' number of books that the greatest-' number would read, but at the sanie time it was necessary to get some of the better class books. If all' could get together and endeavour to get new subscribers it would mean an added income and more books to read. I
