SAVE THE KAURI
— —o XKK!) OF STATE PIKvrKCTIOX By E. T. .Frost. 1 was pleased to hear over the a;r that a large block of forest between, the Hokianga and Whangape I!labours had been set aside as a re, serve. I have paid several visits to this area during the past year find as soon as T saw the area, T advocat d that it lie preserved for all time. Too much forest has been already destroyed in this vicinity and the conservation of this area timely. There is a good deal of kiuri on parts of it, and there is still a dan. gei that some . future administrations may be tempted to work it out. It is to be hoped that the forest \vi!i be so protected that this attaeK on the kauri cannot happen, as it would mean that eventually fire "would get into'the forest. There is a large area of .flat land J both on the north and south sides of i this reserve, the security of .Avhiert j is dependent on'the high land forest being retained. I note ajso that another block of forest land in the Mnng-amuka Ranges has been purchased from private own. 1 s by tiie Crown set aside as a reserve. There is urgent need that a stock taking of our remnant of forest should be [Wit in hand immediately whether privately or publicly owned and an endeavour made to set as : de dl that is possible. Private owners ;hould receive some encouragement to preserve areas, by remission of -atcs on permanently preserved areas or areas closed for re.generation. ; Travelling around the north I notice many such areas and feel sure that the eo.operation of land owners nmld be obtained if a comprehensive •>olicy. of preservation and re.genera- ' ion was undertaken.
