' CATTLESTOPS j The Y/hakatane County Council had before it at its last meeting n letter- from the KnginceiMn-Chief, Public Works Department, which J. stated that a local body had suggested that provision should be made to have eattlestops constructed to the grade of a road. This was certainly intended b.y the department as a 0 eattlestop should be part of a road and be built to any grade and conform to any curve. At the same time, the engineer added, for simplicity's sake wherever it was pos~ — sible a eattlestop should be placed on a straight stretch, or where the curvature of the road was slight. THE SHOOTING SEASON The shooting seasons begins on May''6 and it will continue until June 30. Sportsmen, of course, are praying for unsettled conditions at the onening. and it is not impossible that they will get th ;J rough weather they desire. Business men report that the sale of guns, -imniu. T nition and licenses has been, good, and they believe that it will be even better next week. It is stated that pheasants seem quite plentiful and numerous coveys of quail have been seen, wliile if the Matata lagoon ifany criterion there are many clucks and swan in the district. The lagoon is, of course, a sanctuary and game apparently knows this. —
