NEW GALATEA VALUATION COUNTY COUNCIL OPPOSITION A decision to oppose a revaluation of the Galatea estate at a lower 'igure than the present one was made by the Whakatane County Council at its meeting on Monday. The chairman, Cr J. G. Cliff McCulloch, reported that on April 17 advice was received of the re.valuation. Troutbeck's valuation of the Galatea Es_ tate was improvements £38, 585- and rateable unimproved value £18;957. The 1938-39 rates on th e £56,000 valuation would be £1545 9s Id made up of £874 15s 8d for the 3%d general rate, £233 5s 6d, hospital rate and £437 7s lid for county council and harbour board interest. It was decided after discussion that the council should lodge an objection and endeavour to sustain the present valuation of £2 17s an acre. TOWN PLANNING THREE NEW AREAS The Whakatane County Council at its meeting on Monday confirmed the recommendation of the works committee that an application be made to the Internal Affairs Department to apply the Town Planning Act to Edgecumbe township, an area within half a mile of the Wha. katane Paper Mills general office, and that portion of Ohope comprised in the former separate rating area, including valleys opening on to the Ohope Beach. Cr J. L. Burnett asked for d'scussion on this matter. He wanted the council to realise how important it was. It was looking ahead but would it place no hardship on anyone. It would stoo all undesirable building and planning. The council approved of the plan.
