' BUSY APRIL MEETING THE COMPETITION WINNERS The April meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Parish Hall oft Tuesday April 3, when the after, noon. was observed as a Grandmothers' Day and all grandmothers were presented with flower posies. Mps L. Sisam„ past president, was asked to accept a bouquet from mem hers as tin appreciation of her services, and an entree dish from her last year's committee members. The priz£winner s of the competition were announced as follows: %lobt Frazer, Whakatane, l: ?vli:;s M. Ashton, Otakirj, 2: R. Te Whaiti, 3; I. Patcheli, R. D. Whakatane 4: lan Goldsmith, Manawahe, 5; L. EL Fennell, Awakeri, Wallington, Raukokore, 7; Mfs J, McLaren, Okoroirc., 8; Mrs R. Mann, 9; Father D. Leen, Whakatane, 10. Competitions during the afternoon were won by Mesdames Sisam, Print, Armstrong, Larsen and Cunningham. It was decided to hold a stall ?nd a court at the forthcoming Winter Show, and also to hold card evenings throughout the year and to form a Glee Club. Music and dancing were provided by little Gay Bert and Nellie Butt, and were greatly appreciated. A feature of the afternoon tea was a delightful "Grandmothers Cake," made by Mrs Armstrong and decorat. Ed by Mrs Print. Delegates to the bi.annua] council meeting were appointed as follows: Mesdames Albiston and Moran. GREEN TOMATO PICKLES 6Jb green tomatoes, 2 large onions X A\b brown sugar or 1 cup treacle a few cloves, V<ioz whole g-nger (bruised), *2 teaspoonful cayenne pepper, 1 % bottles brown vinegar. I Cut up tomatoes and onions and sprinkle with salt, and let stand overnight. In the morning drain off the liquid t which is of no more use. Put tomatoes and other ingredients (put ginger into a muslin bag) into a stew pan, and boil for 20 to 30 minutes. Bottle when cold. This is a very tasty pickle.
