TOWN BOARD.
A special meeting of the above Board ■was held at their offices, Government Buildings, on "Wednesday afternoon, j | Present : Messrs E. M. Edgcumbe, , (chairman)j Conway,. Bodell,, Norris^i and T. D. Wrigley. The minutes of last meeting werev read and confirmed, and correspon- j dence approved. ', , v The Chairman read a letter from tho District Surveyor, relative to a request from the 1 Board that a road be laid off through lots 274, 275, 276, Section I>. town of Tauranga, explaining the grounds on which he was unable to; comply with the application. / The following tenders for the formotion and grading of Spring street , were opened:— ' | J. Carthy and S. Earl- £126 S. Martin - - £140
On the proposition of Mr Noms seconded "by 3VU* Bodell, Messrs Ceirthy
and Earl's tender wa& accepted.. • A letter was read from Mr E. 0. Jordan,", asking if the Board would assist', the I'atepayers in 1 Spring street in carrying out a scheme of. drainage for Spring steeet. ; . Mr 13L. C. Jordan,, who .was in. attendance;explained that the- work would cost about £60, and that the ratepayers nttlie locality were prepared to give pound f ok: pound. He further, stated that.the/matter was brought forward at the present time as it would make a material difference in the-cost of the work if it was carried out contemporaneously with the formation of the street*
The Chairman thought the Board might give a subsidy of £20, but certainly not more, and that the balance should be subscribedby the ratepayers ; the subsidy to be given only provided the work was carried out tinder the supervision of the Engineer and in the manner stated by him. On the proposition of Mr Norris, it was carried that a subsidy of £20 towards draining Spring street should be. given by the. Board under certain conditions.
j. It was carried that the Board, meetings, should be held on every alternate Saturday, at 11 a.m., commencing on the 6th January. The question of the extension of the wharf was brought forward, and a proposition , made by Mr Bodell and seconded by Mr Conway was carried, to the effect that a letter | should be written to the Hon. . Mr Whitaker, Eesident Minister in Auckland, informing him that several residents in Tauranga were willing to subscribe the necessary amount required for the extension of the wharf, provided the revenues were set. aside for the liquidation of the money' so advanced, and that the erection of another wharf be disallowed for. seven years. A letter was read from Major Scannell, informing the Board that a wicket gate would be put up in the fence in the Government . Paddock, near the Church Missionary Chapel, as requested. Tho Board then adjourned.
