The. street leading from McLean Street opposite the Market Reserve to Monmoutb. Street, has been named -.neon Street.
Mr Rhodes has shown us a fine speoiaien of quartz found in the bed of , the Beretukahia creek at Katikafj. We understand that Barry is still prospecting somewhere in the locality of Katikati, and that other parties are also out occasionally. The specimen we refer to was found by a stranger.
Late on Friday night, or early on Saturday morning het, another "lark" "(so. called, wft suppose), or malicious act was perpetrated by some unknown persona, on tne Wharf, by throwing the trucks, a ladder, a plough. & tierce of beef, and an empty aasfc into the water. The trucks were brought back afterwards by natives ; one baring been found at Maungatanu and one at the Mount ; the plough waspiofced up out of the water at the and of the wharf.and the ladder was recovered, but nothing h>i S been seen since of the tierce of beef, or the empty cask hie is the third time the trucks have been thrown into thewater in a similar manner, and on each occasion the lessee of the wharf (Mr Commons) has hart to pay for their recovery. We can only suppose that this malicious act, for such it is, when the serious loss is considered, roust h*ve been committed by some drunken roysterers, for what they termed a joke, as Mr Commons is too popular in his capacity as agent, and lessee of the wharf, to make it likely that actual injury to him wua mediated. If. does not really signify much, however, with what motive the act was done, it issufficient that a serious loss is the result, and we can only hope the offenders may be dis. covered.and punished severely as they deserve;
We learn that thirteen men of. *»,e Armed ConsfcabTifftry*" Pnrcg, "" under 'Sub^lnspaßtor Gudgeon, have resumed work at the Ormond end of the Orcaond and Opotiki road. The men arc occupied repairing damages caused by floods in the month of Junqary in' this year" on that portion of the road between the Mdttt river and about four milas this side of Ormond. We are further informed that the' timber for the Motu bridge, cut in the bush near the site of the bridge, is now ready, and that the erect.oa of the bridge will be com* menced in about six weeks.
Tlie Scottish explorer Cameron, who ret oontly returned from the heart of Africa, has orated a good deal of enmity and disgust among " apostolic circles" ,in England, by declaring, that the averige British missionary is v fraud of the first, water. '' Mosstof them," lie says, " are unfir for their work and despisnd by the h<-!it,hen. They go to. Africa, druw Jar^fl sii!ari«s, live i-o>nfortablj, drink Mioir cliai«p»orjß, and then in » coupln' of ypars come back fo tell a druadful tale of the hardships they hnve suffered !"
We «r» informed that the mpmbers of the Tuhourangi tribe reaidottfc at Wairoa.
