Local and General.

, We: are in communication with certain influential gentlemen re the matter of a subsidy to the 8.8. Staffa, alluded to in our last issue as having been refused by the Government, and trust on Wednesday to be in a position to hold out hopes of a subsidy to that exceli lent and useful little steamer, being granted. We refrain to-day from making further re--ference to the subjeot. The enterprising owners of the Staffa, may howaver rest as« sured that we are not asleep.

The Rev Mr Mulgan will hold Divine services at Trinity Ohursh tonnorrow, in the absence of the ttev Mr Jordan at the Diocesan Synod.

From a private source. we learn that Mr Quick, of Auckland, and Mr Young, of Napier, are the only tenderers for the Tan< ranga and Napier overland mail service. Neither tender is as. yet accepted.

We have been informed that the ohief, Hori Tupaea, is anxious that any Europeans who may wish to prospect at Kaimai will proceed with bis son, Akuhata Tupaea on Monday nest.. ETori Tupaea confidently states that no obstruction will be placed in the way of the prospectors.

Colonel (or more properly Mr) Baker's term of imprisonment expired on the 6th August last. It is reported' by the White 1 hall Review that the ex'hussar will at once proceed to join the Servian army, and will undertake the organisation of the Servian Cavalry in the field.

In a cricket match the United South Eleven and Twenty «two of Qrimsby, played at that town on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the Eleven soored a flrat innings of 681. Mr W. Qc. Gbaoe went in first and carried out his bat for 400. He was batting all Monday, all Tuesday, and the greater part of Wednesday.

■ Our enterprising townsman, Mr R. 0. Jordan,, notifies that he has for hire during the eusuing hay '•making season, a first- class mowing-machine and horse-rake. Applications for the use of the machine Bhould be made as early as possible, as they will be registered' and attended to according to priority on list.

Messrs E. Gh Nome, Jamoa Bodell, Firth Wrigley, B. M. Edgcumbe, and T. D. Wrigley offer themselves for nomination to the office of Trustees of the Tauranga North Township Highway, at t' c meetfng to be held nest Wednasday evening- A. short address to this effect from these gentlemen to the ratepayers in the district appears in our advertising ojluums.

We learn from the chief, Enoka, that the intelligence brought into town by Barry, the prospeotor, that he was turned back by natives, ffbo said they had Mr Clarke's authority for acting so, is simply untrue. Euoka says Barry was turned back ' by his (Enoka's) own order, as he wished to see everything satisfactorily arranged before prospectors went on- the ground; Hori Ngatai.. also agreed with Enoka in this prohibition. Both these chiefs intend to explain these things more fully through our columns.

The members of the Tauranga Skating Club passed another pleasant evening, last Thursday in-* the Temperance Hall, and a marked improvement was noticeable in tho " rinking " of both ladies and gentlemen. Mr Albert Russell enlivened the evening by his per* formance on the pianoforte, and rendered some of die latest dance musio in an unexceptionable- manner. The members of the Club feel very, thankful to Mr Russell for his kindness and courtesy, and we can safely Bay that not; the least enjoyable feature in the weekly reunion of the members of the Tauranga Skating Club is the exceedingly pleasant musio discoursed by Mr Russell.

We are glad to notice that Mr E. GK Norn's, in answer to an influentially signed requisition, has convoned a meeting of ratei payers of the Tauranga North Township Highway for next Wednesday avening at seven o'clock, in the Temperance Hall, " for the purpose- of taking into consideration the present highly unsatisfactory nature of Highway matters, and- to recommend names of gentlemen to- act as Trustees, Auditors, and Fenoe-viewers for the enßuing. Highway year, for the approval of the Superintendent." We hope to set) a monster gathering on the occasion. Matters hare been allowed too long to remain in abeyance. Bungling has been the predominatingioharacteristij of corporate affairs, and the town and suburbs are suffering in consequence. Ifc behoves the ratepayers to bestir themselves, and put new blood in circulation.
