MEETING OE MEMBERS OF THE TOWN BOARD.

The members of the Town Board met on Monday morning for the purpose of taking- immediate action with reference to the difficulty they at present labour under with regard to their status.

Messrs E. G. Norris (Chan-man), Conway, Bodell, and J. Bennett, were present.

The Chairman stated that he had, on the 1 9th instant., telegraphed to the Superintendent the position"^ affairs as follows: — "Ratepayers much inconvenienced by factious opposition of a few. Tunks ousted on decision of Magistrate ; plea, not fourteen day's notice) day of notice and election being exclusive. Annual election same position. Can you nominate the five • gentlemen first elected at the annual meeting ; if not, advise me how to proceed." No reply had been received to this telegram. The Chairman then .submitted three propositions, viz :-— "To seek legal advice/ "Resign in a body," "or ' 'Wait result of next mail." After some discussion pro and con, it was proposed by Mr Bennett, seconded by Mr Conway, and carried unanimously, " That the. Board wait the result of next mail, failing any satisfactory communication from the Superintendent, they will resign in a body." The Chairman was requested to telegraph again to Sir George Grey, and has sent the following telegram : — " Have you received my telegram of the 19th ; ratepayers very uneasy."

The members were informed by the Chairman j- that- it was not' his wish that anything should be kept from the ratepayers ; he had heard that ratepayers were complaining of being kept in the dark. The resignation of Mr Mitchell as Auditor, was accepted "fro forma.
