Between two and five on Wednes*day morning a great fir© took place at the corner of Victoria street and Queen street, destroying the whole of the wooden block, containing eight shops and the Blue Post Dining-rooms, and damaging Montague's brick Fancy Establishment on the south side. The fire originated in Sym's barber's shop, accidentally.- The property destroyed is valued at over £6,000, Bennett, draper; Payne, watchmaker; Close Bros., grocers; Cook's furniture warehouse; Turrel-, music seller; Syms, barber; empty shop; Welsman, chemist.. The block belonged to James Wright, a resident in England. Sir George Grey has sent a very warm letter to the Commissioners, re useless expense of their journey, and to Dr Pollen, re Ministere being also civil servants. The Governor returned from the North to-day. The Racing Club are advertising the prospectus of an art union for raising £10,000 to purchase the freehold of the race course and for other purposes. The Suez mail arrives by the Taranaki to-morrow. The Rowena and Yincont enquiry was finished to-day. Judgment will be delivered on Mondaj\ Captain Burton and Mr Mahoney gave evidence in favour of the Bowena. Buckland reports fat cattle 27s 6d to 32s 6d per 100.
