TAURANGA BRANCH OF THE AUCKLAND ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

Mb E. GK Norms, ihe Acting Honorary Secretary, has kindly handed to us for publication the following report and balance sheet of the Tauranga Branch of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society for the year ending February 29th, 1876 :— EEPORT. "To -the Secretary of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. "Sir, — I have the pleasure of submitting to you the report and balance sheet for the year ending 29th February, 1876 :

' 'Seeds. — Most of the seeds sent to me for distribution have proved a failure. I, with much, care, planted some 40 varieties ; some six or seven only succeeded. They were fairly distributed amongst the subscribers, and a fair trial given. It is reported to me that the Paricum Spectabile is likely to prove a very useful grass in this district, as it appears to throw a large amount of feed and in rough ground. Mr Firth's pines are very good. " Quail — "Were fairly distributed to secure success, and, so far as I can learn, are thriving satisfactorily. I had intended turning out four brace on my property at Katikati, but, the weather proving unfavorable, I handed them to. Mr R. C Jordan, who liberated them on his farm at Judea.

" Salmon. — I am exceedingly sorry to report a failure. Considerable expense had been incurred to ensure, so far as possible, the successful re-: moval from Auckland to the streams in which they were to have been liberated. It was reported to me by the officers of the ss Howena that the person sent to take charge of them on the passage down from Auckland was unremitting in his attention, but that the ice placed on board was not sufficient to last. As soon as the supply was exhausted, the fish began dying rapidly, and on arrival about fifteen were alivo. These were, with all possible despatch, placed 1 in- a small tributary of the "Waimapu River. Carp — Are a great success. The several waters that have been stocked are now fairly supplied with fish. "Habes. — Sever al'of the subscribers have from, time to time requested me to apply to you for hares for this district.. I have applied, without success, which has caused much disappointment, and it is repeatedly urged that no difficulty should be experienced in obtaining some, as in many districts they are now very plentiful. " Subscribers. — Subscribers also, and, I think, with justice, remark on the absence of any effort to supply this district with insectivrous birds, and I fear that the subscriptions from this district will rapidly diminish unless some hares and birds of the class above referred to are distributed here.. Starlings surely are, or should" be,, obtainable, at small cost. "Skylarks, — Introduced by Mr Chadwick, are becoming plentiful, and their pleasant song is now to be heard on every farm in the district. " Pheasants. — Pheasants, also introduced by private enterprise, are numerous, and bid fair to become a source of revenue to the Society. "In conclusion, I trust tfoatyour Council will take into consideration this report, with, a view to supplying the wants of the district, as it is a fair expression of the views of subscribers. — I have, &c, E.
