KAIMAI PROSPECTING.
PUBLIC MEETING. 4 very large and influential meeting of Europeans and Natives was held on Wednesday evening at the Tauranga Hotel, to lake into consideration the “ ways and means” of prospecting the Kairaai Country. It was proposed by Mr 0. N, Roberts, and seconded by Mr Brown, “That Mr Bodell take the chair.” Carried. Mr Bodell, on taking the chair, read the requisition calling the meeting, signed by all the most influential townspeople of Tauranga, and briefly introduced the Prospectors,
Mr T. T). Wrigley proposed ‘‘Thai this meeting cordially welcome Messrs Hannah, White, Beecho, and Arthur on their arrival in this district, and sincerely trust that tire mission on which they are now engaged may be eminently successful In proposing this resolution, ho must say he greatly admired the pluck and energy of the gentlemen named ; he knew them and met them in several places in \ ictoria, and he was sure that they were miners of great experience, and would thoroughly test the supposed gold country at Kainmi, (Hear bear.) Mr Fairfax Johnson seconded the resolu* fion, and said bis land was open for the prospecting party, and thought our native brethren were of tbo same mind. (Hear hear) To Kuka rose and shook hands with the Prospectors, and said ho would offer bo opposition, {Bear Hear) The motion was then put, and carried. Mr Fairfax Johnson proposed “ I hat this meeting pledge itself to support, to the fullest extent, the gentlemen named in the first resolution, in their endeavours to prospect the mineral resources of ibis district.” Mr J. C. Young seconded the proposition. Herewini and JSga Wbarau supported the resolution, which was then put and carried unanimously. Proposed by Captain Tanks, seconded by Mr Rhodes, “ That the following gentlemen form a Committee to oo operate with the prospectors: —F, Johnson, M, Hannon, 0, IN, Bcherts, A. Warbriek, J. C, Young, James Pod el I, E. M. Edgcumbe, W. F, Johnson, G. Morris, Wi Marsh, T, I). Wrigley, Samuel Tu, Te Kuka, Firth “Wrigley W, Kelly, and the Mover,” Carried unanimously. Te Kuka, Herewini, Fga Wharau, Muti Muti, Kamai, spoke at length, and all favorably towards opening up their lands. Muti Muti said, “My land is open, but I do not hold all the land. If I had a shop on the Beach and you were may friends, I would tell you to go and help yourself. All right, but I can't say go and help yourself to another man’s properly.” (Loud applause) Mr White then came forward and thanked the meeting for their cordial vote of welcome, on behalf of himself and mates, and it would not be their fault if no gold was found, as they intended to prospect the district most thoroughly, (Applause) It was then moved and carried most enthusiastically, “ That a hearty vote of thanks bo tendered to Mr J. 0. Young for his most able interpreting for the natives, and this meeting is of opinion it is through this gentleman s energy that the meeting has been such a l j success A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings, which were of a most cordial character throughout.
MEETING OP COMMITTEE, A meeting of the Kaimai Prospecting Com. mittteo was held at Mr Bodell’e store on Wednesday evening, the 15th instant, Mr T. 1), Wrigley in the chair. Proponed by MrYoung, and seconded by Mr Hannon, “That the committee hold further communication with the natives Te Pura and Te Kuka desiring them to indicate the particular locality they wish prospected.” Proposed by Mr Bodell, seconded by Mr Hannon, “That a subcommittee of the following gentlemen be formed to collect funds for preliminary expanses: Mr 'J. D. Wrigley, Captain Tunks, and Mr Bodell, Proposed by Mr Young, seconded by Captain Tunks, “That Messrs Bodell, F. Johnson, and the mover use their best endeavour to secure the services of the natives Ta Pura and Te Kuka at the earliest possible date to accompany the prospectors to the prospecting ground. Proposed by Mr Young, seconded by MrF. Johnson, “ '1 hat Mr J. Highley act m Secretary to the Committee.”. Proposed by Mr Young, seconded by Captain Tunks, “ That Mr Bodell act as Treasurer.” Proposed by Mr Hannon, seconded by Mr F. Johnson, “ That on arrival of the natives the Secretary call a meeting of the Com* mittee.”
