Since tlie sub-leader in our last issue on the survey of tlio To Puke and Eangiora blocks we have had reason to take another view of the subject. A journal, like this,
devoted to the interests of the public of all classes and sects, either mb gious or political, and entirely pendent, seeks and obtains tion from all sources, often coibj' dietory; but, it is the duty of jour.' nalibts to thoroughly sift all such fa* formation—by no means an easy undertaking—and arrive as possible at tho truth. We are to make these remarks from a suspicion that, in this instance, it is p o !_ sible there may be another the question. There can he no doubt that the To Puke and Eangiora blocks would bo most valuable in the banth of Europeans, though valueless not and that their settlement and cultivation would tend materially to tk. prosperity of tho district; knowing this, we, in the interest of the publh\ advocated the speedy consummation ol tho bargain with the native owner?. Wo all know the difficulties attending dealing in land with natives, and | may bo that in our previous remark] wo did not lay sufficient stress on the fact that it is impossible jo pa? to each individual his just claim until th survey and sub-division Jmlm completed , and this, doubtless, has influenced the Government in advaucmg only £6OO ; and, it suchho tlieease, looking at it in the light of a business transaction, wo think the Government is right in being satisfied that tie proper parties are receiving tho pur.
