The enquiry before the Collector of Customs as to the death of the second mate revealed no one to blame. Dr Coulson, a quack doctor, Shortland street, was lined £lO, or two months’ imprisonment, for practising without being duly registered. Barrett, who was -wounded in the row at Welsh’s house, lies in a precarious condition at the Hospital. Also Mrs Heath, who tried to commit suicide by jumping off the wharf. Barrett’s depositions have been taken. Mr Swanson, M.H.E., has refused to accept a dinner from the electors of Newton. Many ladies are agitating to take part in the reception to be given to Sir George Grey on bis arrival on the 10th. There are 16 nominations for the Auckland Cup, and 17 for the Grand Stand Handicap for the Racing Club’s New Year’s Mooting. W. Cameron tendered for the whole of the City New Debentures at £9O. T3io tender has been refused. Arrived: Glencoe, from Hobart Town. In consequence of heavy rain on Saturday two landslips took place on Sunday in the suburbs. The Government have refused to allow the public the use of Government House Grounds for promenade. A largo whale was captured off Russell on Saturday, which is expected to yield 6 tons of oil.
