(from oke own correspondent.) Auckland, Tuesday evening. Arrived : Coronet and Pearl, both from tho South Seas, with valuable cargoes. In a riot at Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, two natives were wounded. The row began about a half-caste woman travelling with Beda, gymnast, whom Kawiti, a chief, claimed as belonging to his tribe. An old man named Barrett was battered with an iron bar by a blacksmith named Moore, and lies dangerously ill. Twcnty-nim l cut rios wore received for tho Birthday Handicap at the Ellerslie Athletic Festival. On Sunday morning tho boarding bouse belonging to Bogan, West Queen street e-aught lire. Only £2O worth damage was done. Mr Bicbard Grattan, of the Thames Hotel, died suddenly yesterday of erysipelas. On Monday tho trial trip of the Wellington took place. The speed approached 11 knots. The machinery worked well. Eighty sat down to a luncheon on board.
Edward Durill, a workman on the railway works beyond Mercer, vvas killed last evening by.a fall of earth. Deceased was a sinaietyiian, aged 24. Mr Grattan was buried to-day with Masonic honors.
PEE PRESS AGENCY. The Bank of New Zealand held its half-yearly meeting to-day, and showed a net profit for the half-year, after providing for bad and doubtful debts, of £47,103; balance undivided last half-year, £16,974; total, £64,077. A dividend of 10 per cent, and a bonus of 5s per share were declared. The dividend and bonus are payable on the 27th of October.
Mr Stone, in moving the adoption of the report, said since the commencement £920,000 had been paid in dividends, £IBO,OOO to reserve fund, and £IOO,OOO written off. The balancesheet showed deposits and circulation £6,180,000, including one million and a half of the four million loan. Demands for accommodation during the past year were very great. The directors believed a return as favorable as that of to-day could be made on increased capital, they proposed therefore to issue 10,000 now shares, which will be first offered to present shareholders at £5, viz., £3 below present colonial value. Payment for new shares not required before the Ist of January, from which date they will participate in profits of the half-year,
