Correspondence.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I notice by your Opotiki oorrcspOD' dent’s account of an indignation meeting held ! at Opotiki relative to the non-calling of the steamer Rowena at Ohiwa on her down trip the week before last, that a vote of censure was passed on me (for what is not stated,.but I presume) because I did not cross tbe Ohiwa bar on tbe occasion referred to. Sir, I amnot writing this letter for the purpose of ex* plaining why I did not think it desirable to cross the Ohiwa bar on that occasion, but* while the passing by tbe Opotiki settlers of a vote of censure on me is treated as a good joke and laughed at in Taumuga? and Auckland by all who know me, it might possibly cause strangers to* think that I was incapable of navigating the* Ohiwa bar. In proof that such is not probable, I wish to state, through your columns, that for twenty years I have been sailingbetween Auckland and tbe settlementsin tbe Bay of Plenty, and it ishardly necessary to add, know the entrance to Ohiwa as well, if not belter, than any man on the .East Coast j it is of a shifting nature* and therefore not always to be depended on. Mir Litchfield's statement that the bar was "smooth in the channel" on the occasion alluded to I may say is false. At any rate, a* I before said, I am not going to enter into particulars as to my reasons for not crossing the bur; simply I did not choose to do so, and lam in charge of the steamer Eowena, and not Mr Litchfield or any other man. Apologising for trespassing on your» valuable space*—-l am, &c. Daniel- Sellars, Master s.s. Rowena.
