TAURANGA R.M. COURT.
Wednesday, October 13, 1873. (Before Major Roberts, R.M.)
Alexander Cook, landlord of tlie Tauranga Hotel, was charged on the information of Constable Whelan with allowing one of the chimneys of the hotel to be on fire on the evening of the 10th instant.
Constable Whelan deposed to seeing a flame issuing from the chimney in question at the time stated, and was supported in his evidence by Constables Henry and Thomas Blick. Mr Cook did not admit that the chimney was on fire, but admitted that a temporary flame might have boon carried up the chimney on account of some water being thrown on the fire at the time it was lighted, the chimney 1 laving a peculiarly strong draught. The Court considered the case proved, but as this was the first offence a nominal fine of Is and costs only was inflicted. Edgcumbev. Hastio : Claim £6 15s, for advertising and subscription to the Bay of Plenty Times newspaper.— There was no appearance of defend-ant.-—Judgment for plaintiff for full amount and costs.
Eru v. Natanu: Claim £5 15s, — The plaintiff failed to prove his claim, and judgment was accordingly given for defendant with, costs.
