Local and General.

We have been requested by tho President and Committee of the Mechanics’ Institute to thank the ladies and gentlemen who so kindly took part in the musical entertainment given on Wednesday evening last, in aid of the funds of the lust it uto. Black swans are frequently seen between Paeroa and Grubamelowu on the Thames river. The quail recently received from (he Accli* matization Society have been distributed as follows:—2 pairs to Yen. Archdeacon Brown, 3 pairs to Mr li. 0. Jordan, to be let loose at Judea. The birds from all accounts are doing well. We have inspected a enmp’e of the seed and eating potatoes on sale at the auction room of our respected fellow townsman, Mr Budell, and can conscientiously recommend them to the favorable notice of those in want of firstclass potatoes either for the table or for seed. The following is (lie gratifying result in a pecuniary sense of the entertainment given on Wednesday evening last in aid of the funds of the Mechanics’ institute : —Total receipts, £23 Ids. 6cl. ; expenses for bill, lighting, music, &c., £7- 10s 8 1.; thus leaving a balance to creditof the institute of £l6 ss. 101,

The following tenders for the erection of the Motu Bridge on the Opotiki and Poverty Bay r >ad have been received at the Public Works Office, Tauranga; —John Kelly, £658; J Thompson, £582 10s. ; J. B, Jackson, £199; 0. J. Abbott, £327. The tenders have been telegraphed to Wellington for acceptance. We perceive by advertisement that Dr Can*, the renowned phrenologist and mesmerist, wid be in Tauranga in the course of a fortnight Dr Carr has been holding, a series of most successful seances at Napier and Gisborne, and our contemporaries in those districts vie with each other in their econiuma on the wonderful talent of this world-famed processor. A rare treat is in store for the residents of this district.

We perceive by the estimates that Captain Turner, District Engineer, has been appointed to the • charge of public works in tho Upper Waikato and Thames districts, in addit ion to those in tho Bay of Plenty district. Wecongratu'ateCaptain Turner on his promotion to a more extended field of oper Tons—a step which his indefatigable zeal and able administration durii g the five years ho has been in charge of the Buy of Plenty dist i;t fully wan rant —and the Government on the discrimination they have evinced in the se’edion of an officer to fill the vacancy caused in tho Upper Waikato and Thames districts hy the resignation of Mr W H. Clarke, Civil Engineer. Tauranga will still bo Captain Turner’s headquarters.
